Blast from the past: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season 1

I've been rewatching the season 1 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer lately (I'm a big fan of the show, and Joss Whedon) and just had to write about Buffy's style on that season. I just find it very nostalgic, since her clothes could've been picked out from my closet at the time. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't actually think the style is great anymore, but it just makes the show that much more real to me, since I was about Buffy's age when the series began airing and I was actually living in US at the time.

The best example is definitely this outfit:
I wore a lot of stuff that looked like that... Also Cordelia's pants seem familiar, although I think mine were orange. Buffy's outfit actually include boots, which you can also see in the group picture below. I loved boots, I think I still do. I still would wear boots, it's just very hard to find ones that fit with my shoe size, I shop in the children's section in Finland.
These next ones are few more examples:

People tend to not like the first season of Buffy that much. I do. It's just a bit different than the rest. But I love the way the series grow with Buffy. The first season is a bit more fluffy, but then again, the main characters are 15. And I also like teen shows/movies, especially the ones I used to watch, like all the Molly Ringwald movies. I just think the first season is very much the style and way of life of someone that age. And as I said, the style used to be so me. And also, you can see the spark start here.

Planning my wardrobe - part I

I was reading Coletterie blog few days ago and they had this great post: A practical, personal wardrobe. While reading this, I realized that I spend a fair amount of my time at home. And even if I just want to wear something comfortable, I feel better if it also looks good. At the moment the clothes I use at home are mostly old, really worn stuff. Mostly it's comfortable, but it doesn't look that great. I don't want to put a whole lot of money on clothes that I only see, which is probably why this has happened. But I think there was a great idea in the post: log what you do for a couple of weeks and then start planning your wardrobe according to it. I love charts and I love planning, so this should be fun!

About this blog

I have a craft blog: Monday night sewing circle, but as I've been getting more and more excited about personal style, while getting into sewing, I thought I would create a new blog. Not so much from the crafts point of view (although I'm sure that's included), but more on the design point of view. And yes, maybe these could've been in the same blog, I see them as totally different. Also I'm blogging about crafts both in English and in Finnish and I decided to do this only in one language. Probably I'll write something about the actual sewing to my other blog in Finnish also.

I have been long interested in sewing, but haven't really had good instructions. If I would still live at home, I'm sure my mum could help me, but now I would need something that I could use on the little spare time I have. Finally, after hearing so many good things about it, my sister convinced me that I need a sewing book. It's in Finnish, the title is roughly translated as "Every guy's pattern book" (Joka tyypin kaavakirja). Well, actually now that I think about it, it might be "Every type's pattern book". Or maybe it's a wordplay. As the very gender neutral word for guy is actually the word type.

In any case, this book has really gotten me excited. It has few basic patterns, but the thing is: it shows how to do all this other stuff with the same patterns. It teaches you to fit and modify the patterns to your liking and for the optimal fit. This is exactly what I need, since my back is a bit crooked and storebought pants never really fit me well. I think this is an answer to my prayers.

One thing more I have to do before I can start my education in sewing (I mean I used to sew in school, but the results were sometimes a bit hazardous as my elementary school teacher didn't think me as one of her favorites). I have tried and tried to sew with my grandmother's old sewing machine (you can see a picture of it here). But every time I'm so frustrated that now I decided to buy a new machine. I found a pretty good deal on the internet and I should get it next week, yey!

I won't post all of my sewing here, just about my style. At the moment I'm thinking of keeping this as a wardrobe style kind of a blog, so not so much about home decoration. I'll reserve the right to change my mind, though. And my style postings will probably include a fair amount of vintage fashion, since it's swing dancing (and more particularly charleston) that got me excited about style and fashion. Well, I have to say, I probably won't blog too much about fashion. I don't follow trends that much, but I tend to know what I like. I just try to keep my eyes open a bit more.

Welcome to my style expedition journey!
